Doggy Friendly Baking: A Great Tasty Recipe!

We love our dogs and we love to treat them, so why not do it by baking a yummy dog-friendly cake or some healthy homemade treats. There are lot of recipes out there on the web but here is one of my tried and tested favourites that dogs absolutely love!

Homemade Peanut Butter & Bacon Treats
Prep Time: 10 minutes Cook Time: 32 minutes

Ingredients:

• 225g natural creamy peanut butter (Most on the market are fine to use but always check that xylitol is not on the ingredient list-Sun Pat is a doggy safe brand)
• 180ml skimmed milk
• 1 large egg
• 245g whole wheat flour
• 1 Tablespoon Baking Powder
• 30g Oats
• 2-3 strips cooked bacon-roughly chopped

Preheat oven to 170C or Gas Mark 3. Line 2 large baking trays with parchment paper or use silicone mats

Gently mix the peanut butter, milk, and egg together with a wooden spoon or rubber spatula. Add the flour and baking powder. You may need to turn the dough out onto a floured work surface and use your hands to work in the flour. Mix in the oats and bacon. The dough is extremely thick and heavy.

Using a floured rolling pin, cut into shapes using cookie cutters or a knife. Arrange on the baking sheets. Bake for 18-20 minutes, or until very lightly browned on the bottom. Remove from the oven, and flip the treats to bake the other side for 10-12 more minutes.
Allow cooling completely before serving to your pup. Cover and store leftovers at room temperature for up to 1 week or in the refrigerator for up to 2 weeks.

There are hundreds of recipes you can try and once you know some key safe ingredients it’s gets easier to bake your pooch some quick and tasty treats. However, if you want to start experimenting with doggy baking, you need to know what is safe to bake with and what isn’t.

These are some of the things that are potentially harmful and should never be included in doggy recipes.

• Chocolate
• Cocoa powder
• Xylitol sweetener (be careful as this can be found in peanut butter – a doggy treat favourite)
• Macadamia nuts
• Caffeine based products such as coffee beans
• Alcohol
• Yeast dough
• Grapes, Raisins and Sultanas
